I ordered a copy of A Party Chef's Guide to Delicious Encounters as a gift for a longtime friend who loves to cook and always treats her friends and family royally. I enjoyed the stories from the author's personal experience and the accounts she gave from history and literature, and I appreciate the recipes and the tips such as the one about serving two-color soup in a spectacular way. It is not a cookbook though it has recipes, and it is not an instruction book though it gives suggestions from how to furnish a kitchen to how to deal with mishaps. At an evening gathering as several of us enjoyed my friend's homemade soup, this book inspired a lively conversation about our own experiences cooking, entertaining, and sharing the table with others, that is, about our own delicious encounters.
